Death toll of Monkeys shoots up to 17 in Udupi district

Udupi, January 13, 2019: Monkeys continue to die mysteriously with six more deaths being reported in Kundapur taluk on Saturday. With this the number of monkeys dying under mysterious circumstances increased to 17.

Sources in Kundapur taluk health office told media that mysterious deaths of monkeys were reported from Kandlur, Belve, Kodagi, Kukkehalli, Brahmavar and Byndoor. The post-mortem of four monkeys has been done and samples have been sent to the Viral Diagnostic Centre in Shivamogga.

The viscera could not be collected from the decayed carcass in Kodagi as the monkey was suspected to have died three days ago. So far, no person has tested positive for KFD in the district, said Dr. Rohini, District Health and Family Welfare Officer of Udupi.

The Health Department is conducting awareness programmes in places where the monkey deaths have been reported, she said.

Meanwhile, sources at Kasturba Hospital in Manipal said here on Saturday that 69 patients suspected with KFD from in and around Sagar in Shivamogga district have been admitted to the hospital here. Of these, 25 had tested positive while 40 were negative. The reports of four persons were awaited. As many as 50 persons had been discharged after getting treatment, while 19 were availing treatment at the hospital. No death has been reported owing to KFD, sources said.
