Mangalore, April 19: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi witnessed hunder and lightening accompanied by heavy rainfall  in the nights of April 17 and April 18. Power supply in several areas was disrupted owing to the rains.

A number of electric poles, areca nut trees, and coconut trees fell and a few houses were damaged by lightening. All the taluks in the twin districts witnessed rainfall, and the summer temperature went down by several degrees. Religious programmes scheduled to be held at certain temples were interrupted because of the rains.


In Sullia, the smooth flow of traffic was disrupted because of large trees that had fallen and lay across the roads. Moreover, the city as well as a few surrounding regions did not have power from the night of Sunday to seven in the morning of Monday.


Traffic was blocked because of a huge tree that was uprooted at Tokkottu. Also, a tree fell across a jeep travelling to Kerala; but luckily, no one was injured.


A house belonging to Indira Salian in Bengre was damaged when a coconut tree fell on it. The financial loss is estimated to be around Rs 1 lakh.


Fishermen could not go out fishing. Fishing boats belonging to Nalini Salian (Abhin), Shrikant (Jnana Shri), Anasuya (Shri Janani), Shivanand (Pragati Sagar), Bhoja Kharvi (B R Sagar), Ashok Kharvi (Anuj), Karunakar Kharvi (Jalagowri Prasad), Taranath Mendon (Shivakripa), and Shankar Kharvi (Jala Nagin) were damaged and the loss is estimated to be anywhere between Rs 75,000 and Rs 1 lakh.

District in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar heard a bundle of woes from Bengre fisermen, as he visited the spot on April 19.

The main reason for the boat capsizes is silt said minister Palemar, who interacted with media persons after his visit. Later he has pacified all the fishermen and said the silt will be removed soon.
