Mangalore, May 31: The Dakshin Railway Employees’ Union under the banner of CITU organized a protest in the Mangalore Central Railway Station on May 31, Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, P. V. He also urged the government to clear all open and covered drains before the monsoons set in and that the damaged IC near the second block should be repaired at the earliest possible.
Stating that the employees’ union has organized protests more than thrice, he said that the government has chosen to ignore their pleas.

Around 45 employees from the engineering, mechanical, signal, traffic, and other departments organized the protest.

K. Haridas, the assistant general secretary, said that the protest is staged against the anti labour policies of the railway authorities, adding that the government is doing nothing about filling up the 2.5 lakh vacancies in railway departments across India although the number of trains and the speed at which they move are increasing. He also alleged that the central government is trying to cut down employees’ benefits.

He also demanded that new quarters should be constructed as per the number of employees, immediate repair and maintenance work done wherever required, and provision of facilities such as taps, water tanks, flooring of marble, and so on in all the quarters. They also demanded that steps should be taken to eradicate mosquito menace in railway colonies and that rest rooms should be provided to all the departments.
