Mangaluru, Jan 23, 2017: : Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has called upon all people of the district as well as leaders cutting across political lines to join hands and participate in the Hakkottaya Protest to be held at Moodbidri on January 28 to condemn the ban on Kambala.
Speaking at an interaction meeting here on January 24, Tuesday, Nalin said Kambala with a history of nearly 1000 years has a close connection with the culture and tradition of the district.
He reiterated no cruelty was inflicted on buffaloes during Kambala and added that there was much difference between Jallikattu and Kambala. He also said people have to participate in the protest in large numbers if they have to show their strength in support of Kambala. It is only that that the protest would help in realising the objective, he said.
Nalin also welcomed the statement of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in support of Kambala.
Pavana Chandra Shetty, advocate who also spoke, said though the Kambala was permitted with conditions laid down by the Department of Animal Husbandry in December 2015, PETA moved the court seeking a ban by comparing Kambala to Jallikattu. He also exuded confidence that the ban on Kambala would be lifted.
Sri Balikodi Shashikanth Swamiji who too was present, said Kambala buffaloes were given special treatment and that there was no cruelty or torture on the animals.
Theatre personalities Vijaykumar Kodialbail, Naveen D Padil, District Kannada Sahitya Parishat President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Buntara Sangha President Ajith Kumar Rai, Kambala Committee President Ashok Kumar Rai and others were present.
