DK has no scarcity of water, declares Mr. Kodgi

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 8, 2012: Chairing a meeting of the task force to implement the third finance commission report on the premises of the DK Zilla Panchayat, A. G. Kodgi, its chairman, urged panchayats to ensure that water supply to each house is monitored through meter system. Observing that the district has no scarcity of water, he said that water is being wasted and misused in the district.

He also demanded an explanation from concerned officials regarding the meter system implemented in the DK. When told that water is supplied to most houses without meter monitoring, he directed Shailaja Bhat, the president of the DK Zilla Panchayat, and Dr. K. N. Vijay Prakash, the CEO of DK Zilla Panchayat, to convene a meeting and direct all the GPs to adopt meter-based water supply to houses.

He informed officers concerned that by leaving some houses unmetered, they are giving people the opportunity to misuse water. Stating that people in farms use as much water as they like because there is no meter, he said that this leads to scarcity of water for the rest of the people.

Mr. Kodgi also directed officers to find out how many houses are self-sufficient in water to determine the exact number of houses that actually require Panchayat water. He also pointed out that the concerned department has absolutely no idea on how many MLDs a taluk requires.

He also said that the district should make optimum use of its surface water resources. Referring to digging of borewells and supplying water through tankers as meaningless, he said that they only deplete the state treasury. Besides, a large number of borewells deplete ground water, he added.

Dr. K. N. Vijay Prakash, the CEO of DK Zilla Panchayat, informed Mr. Kodgi that a proposal to provide water to 216 villages under the multi village scheme has been submitted to the government.
