Mangalore, Mar 17: The District Crime Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) successfully arrested 11 associates of Chota Shakeel, the underworld don, who had planned to murder 4 associates of Ravi Poojary, another underworld don.

Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Gopal Hosur, divulged this information at a press meet held at the SP Guest House on March 17, Wednesday. The 11 persons who have been arrested had also laid plans to extract ransom from rich businessmen through telephone, said the IGP.  


The DCIB had directed police officers to arrest the chief accused in a murder attempt made on Moosakunni from Madadka. Belthangady police had registered a case regarding this murder attempt in September. When the police raided the house of Manjunath of Ashoknagar, where the accused was reported to be living, they arrested 7 others and seized weapons from them. 


The arrested are Manjunath alias Manju (22) of Kempanahalli at Chickmagalur, Susheel Kumar alias Monu (24) of Askoknagar at Dambel, Lateesh Nayak alias Lasse (21) of Kudroli, Ashwin Anchan (25) of Kudroli, Suresh Alban D’Souza (38) of Bejai, Lohit Gatty (21) of Bhavanthi Street, Praveen (30) of Urwa Store, Sushanchandra (22) of Capitanio. 


The arrested confessed that they had conspired to kill Ravi Poojary’s gangsters under the directions of Chota Shakeel within a fortnight and escape to Chickmagalur where they had rented a house at Chandragiri. They also said that the sharp shooters from Mumbai planned to stay in the same house. The arrested had a list of rich businessmen and prominent politicians along with their contact details.


Superintendent of Police Dr A Subramanyeshwar Rao said that the police raided the house in Chickmagalur, where they arrested Ganesh Shivaram Shetty (35) of Mumbai, Rakesh Mishra alias Rohan (28) of Uttar Pradesh, and Manjunath alias Manju (21) of Chickmagalur. The officers also confiscated a revolver, 3 bullets, Rs 63,000, and mobile phones from the arrested. 


Ganesh is a sharpshooter based in Mumbai, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1994. Another accused in the case, Harish Shetty, is reported to have fled to Nepal, he said. The SP also said that Chota Shakeel, who is the chief accused in this case, also has to be arrested.

 

DCIB Venkatesh Prasanna, ASI K Narayan Maniyani, Chetan Botyadi, Chandra Adoor, Santosh Padeel, Dharmendra, Ganesh Kalladka, Sudhakar, Shashidhar Shetty, Ganesh Manya, Dinesh Bekal, Kumar B, Prashant Shetty, Rithesh Kottary, and others under the guidance of IGP Gopal Hosur, SP Subramanyeshwar Rao, and Additional SP R Ramesh were part of the investigation team. The above-mentioned team, along with drivers Devayya and Shantha Shetty, received cash awards from the IGP during the press conference.
