Mangalore Today News Network

Vittal, July 6, 2011: Dr. Channappa Gowda, the DC of Dakshina Kannada, visited the place where arecanut farms were destroyed in the floods caused by a breach in a dam constructed across Anekallu Hole in Karopady in Vittal on Wednesday.

He told reporters that the government of Kerala constructed the dam after hastily obtaining a license from inter-state water resource department. Stating that the dam has been constructed in an unscientific manner, he said that there are many technical errors in the way it has been designed. Constructed through the Varkady GP in Kerala, the dam is of poor quality and has caused untold sufferings to the farmers of Karnataka. He said that the government of Kerala should provide compensation to the farmers for the crops they had lost and that the government of Karnataka will provide compensation for rain damage. He promised that he would discuss the issue with both governments.

Stating that he is unsure of allegations that the previous DC permitted the construction of this dam, he said that he will personally check the documents to find out whether these allegations are true.

The officials of the horticulture department prepared an estimate of the loss on the spot.

The DC was accompanied by C. N. Venkatesh, the executive engineer of the irrigation department; Gopala Gowda, the assistant engineer; Mohammed Hanif, the assistant director of the horticulture department; and others.

The DC is also bent upon speeding up the road widening work in Vittal, which commenced 3 – 4 years back and is going on at a snail’s pace.

Previous DCs Subodh Yadav and V. Ponnuraj took great interest in widening this road and directed officials to widen it by 33ft. 85 percent of the land acquisition process for this project has already been completed, but the project got delayed because some traders refused to part with their land.

DC Chennappa Gowda said that legal steps will be taken if the traders failed to part with their land for this project. The PWD engineers will undertake another survey in this regard, he said.

The DC has also instructed Ramanath Vittal, the president of the GP, to take legal action. He said that he will pass directions in this regard.
