Crash debris cleared: Villagers stage protest and road block

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, July 10, 2010: Fiza Projects has finally cleared the debris of the ill-fated Air India Boeing, which plunged into the Kenjar valley after overshooting the runway on May 22. The last piece cleared was the aircraft’s nose, which had sunk 5ft beneath the soil. The parts of the plane have been piled in a specially created dump yard opposite Deccan Park Hotel in Kenjar.

Promoter of Fiza Projects Ahmed Bawa said that all the parts of the plane have been recovered during the past two days and piled in the new dump yard near Deccan Park. The airport authorities have requested relief workers to search the area once again for baggage or any personal items belonging to the plane crash victims.

Meanwhile, the people of Kenjar staged a protest against the bad roads of the village and the carelessness of the PWD and the Airport Authority of India (AAI). They blocked the road when the truck was transporting the plane crash debris to the newly created dump site.

Over 200 villagers from Kolambe, Addepady, Malavoor, ad Kandavara, under the leadership of Vinod Mada, a Zilla Panchayath member, staged the protest and blocked the road, demanding immediate repairs.

The villagers said that they had been requesting the repair of these roads for the past 5 years because even buses cannot ply along this road, which connects 5 villages housing more than 15,000 people. Since private bus operators are unwilling to ply along these roads, the villagers have been denied public transportation. After the plan crash of May 22, the road has been completely damaged and it has also collapsed in a few places.

Mr. Mada said that the Kenjar - Deccan Park road was completely damaged because heavy trucks and equipment used to clear the debris are continuously plying along it. They also said that increased volume of traffic along this road has further damaged it. The protestors turned back only after officials concerned assured them that the road will be repaired immediately.
