Court of Inquiry into Air crash conducts investigation for the second day

Mangalore, Jun 8: The court of inquiry appointed to investigate the Mangalore plane crash of May 22 stepped into the second day of investigation on June 8. The team arrived yesterday and commenced its preliminary investigation. It visited the site of the plane crash and examined the runway in the evening. 

 

 

 

 

 

The court of inquiry, which comprises 15 aviation experts, discussed the plane crash with airport officials this morning. The team spoke to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) personnel, the airport director, and other airport officials to understand their views on the Mangalore plane crash, which is considered to be among the worst air disasters in the history of civil aviation. 

 

The inquiry team visited Air crash survivors at the hospital and collected first hand information from them. The team will various authorities and experts who have already collected information immediately after the crash.

 

The team is scheduled to meet the officials of the district administration in the afternoon to understand its take on the May 22 plane crash. The team will speak to Deputy Commissioner-in-charge Prabhakar Sharma, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gopal Hosur, Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, and other senior officials. 

The court of inquiry, led by Retired Air Chief Marshal Bhooshan Neelakantha Gokhale, was appointed by the Civil Aviation Ministry on June 3 to conduct a high-level inquiry. 

On May 22, an ill-fated Air India Express Boeing from Dubai to Mangalore overshot the runway at Mangalore International Airport and plunged into the gorge beyond, killing 158 of its passengers and crew. Only eight of its passengers survived.
