The construction work is progressing quickly. Besides, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is also widening the NH 17 stretch from Pumpwell to Talapady. A number of trees have been felled and bulldozers are busy at work in this area. Reportedly, the Navyug Udupi Tollway Private Ltd., which has won the Kundapur – Talapady four-lane project, of which the above mentioned construction work is part of, has been pressurized to complete the work as early as possible.

The construction of the Netravathi Bridge, which is the longest of the nine bridges between Kundapur and Talapady, commenced in September 2010 and has been going on at a brisk pace for the past 5 months. More than 200 workers, technical officers, and engineers are speeding it up to meet the deadline. While the workers have been placed in 3 shifts, the technical staff has been placed in 2 shifts.

Currently, the pile foundation is being laid since the bridge will be held by 24 pillars, including 18 pillars in the water and 6 pillars along the river, each pillar being 33.25ft tall.

Sanjay Singh, the project engineer, told reporters that five drilling rigs are currently working in the water and that hydra rigs will arrive in a couple of months. He said that the work was delayed owing to the monsoons and that the work is moving very fast now and that the entire project will be completed by May 2011.

Once the new bridge has been constructed, the Navyug Udupi Tollway Private Ltd. will undertake the task of repairing the existing bridge.
