Mangaluru, November 3, 2019: MLC Ivan D’Souza has said that the Congress would complain to the State Election Commission and also approach the High Court against Sangeetha R Nayak who has filed nomination as a BJP candidate from Pachanady ward. He alleged that Sangeetha had misled the Tahsildar and secured a caste certificate that she is a Muslim while she who was Ishrath Begum earlier had embraced Hinduism and was renamed as Sangeetha after her marriage to Ravindra Nayak.
Ivan said as Pachanady is a BC(A) reserved ward only a Billawa or Muslim candidate can contest and that Sangeetha can contest only in wards reserved for general category. He further said the BJP candidate must be disqualified.
Former mayor Kavitha Sanil and others were present at the press meet.
Argument between BJP, Congress
A massive argument broke between Ivan and BJP leader Jagadish S at the RO office when both of them were trying to justify their points. The incident took an ugly turn and the police had to intervene to pacify the sparring leaders.
Sangeeta R Nayak originally hailed from the Islam community and her birth name is Ishrath Begum. However, she converted after she entered into wedlock with a Hindu man. The woman also approached court grant of change of religion and the III Additional and Civil Judge in Mangaluru awarded her request in April 2017. Followed by this, her name has been changed in all the necessary documents. But the court denied to provide her with the caste citing apex court order that says caste is attributed from birth.
While Sangeeta speaking to media said she has submitted all the documents and she is entitled to contest the election.
