Congress leader Poojary offers condolences to Bangarappa’s family

Mangalore, Dec 26, 2011: B. Janardhan Poojary, the former union minister, offered his condolences to the near and dear ones of Sarekoppa Bangarappa, the former chief minister of Karnataka, who expired in a private hospital in Bangalore after a brief illness, early this morning. 


Address a press conference at Press Club today, Poojary said that Bangarappa was a socialist who had worked for the development of the poor sections of the society in general and farmers in particular.


When he was the chief minister of Karnataka, he had distributed pump sets among farmers, free of cost, he added.

Speaking about the excellent relationship he shared with Bangarappa for nearly 40 years, Poojary said that he was the only political leader who was recommended for the post of Congress state president by Indira Gandhi, the late former prime minister of India. 


Stating that Bangarappa had supported the renovation of Shri Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, he said that their friendship did not suffer even when Bangarappa had a difference of opinion with the party and walked out. 


Referring to Bangarappa’s death as a great loss to the poor, the farmers, the state of Karnataka, and his family, Poojary said that Bangarappa bears the credit of building different political parties twice or thrice. Pointing out that the Congress attracted votes because of Bangarappa, he said that the party was defeated when Bangarappa walked out. 


Oath-taking ceremony for married women 


Poojary also said that 5000 married women will take an oath at Shri Kudroli Gokarnatheshwara Temple that he will continue wearing their mangalasutras even in case of their husband’s death, on the occasion of the temple’s 100th anniversary on Jan 1, 2012. 


Revealing further details, he said that the ceremony will commence with a Chandika Homa at 3:00 p.m. and married women will pull a silver chariot bearing the idol around the temple. Each woman will then be given a sari, a blouse piece, kumkum, flowers, and bangles, he added. 


Commenting on Made Snana, he said that the temple will make arrangements for devotees to perform urulu seve on a marble floor cleaned with dettol once a year on the occasion of Navarathri. 


H. S. Sairam, the president of the temple, and Harikrishna Bantwal, the Congress leader, were also present.
