Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 8, 2012: Addressing a press conference in Hotel Moti Mahal on June 8, Friday, H. D. Kumaraswamy, JD (S) leader and former chief minister of Karnataka, said that the Congress and the BJP have done nothing for the welfare of teachers and graduates in the state.

He also accused D. H. Shankaramurthy, chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, of calling the achievements of the coalition government as his own. Criticizing Shankaramurthy, he challenged him to give an account of the BJP government’s own achievements.

Listing the achievements of the JD (S), he said that the party had given 1,400 high schools, 500 junior colleges, 189 first grade colleges, 6 medical colleges, and 6 engineering colleges under the Grama Vasthavya Campaign while the BJP could give only 169 first grade colleges.

Further, he said that the Congress had not recruited any teachers from 1999 to 2004 while the JD (S), during its 20-month tenure, had appointed 28,000 lectures and teachers. He also said that when he was the chief minister of the state, he had given Rs. 2000 as subsidy for trainee advocates, Rs. 25,000 for engineering students, and Rs. 75,000 for medical students, but the BJP government had stopped these subsidies. He urged people to cast their precious votes in favor of the right candidate and the right party.

Speaking on the occasion, JD(S) leader Puttanna said that Shankaramurthy’s achievements as the elected representative of the teachers’ constituency are zero and that he is only taking credit for the achievements of the coalition government. Although the High Court ordered that all vacant teaching posts must be filled, the government has not recruited a single teacher and not a single program has been launched for the constituency, he said.

Criticizing the BJP, he said that nearly 50 – 60 lakh students in Karnataka have not yet received their text books. Besides, the BJP is making attempts to withdraw the Nali Kali system and introduce central syllabi in spite of the fact that teachers are not trained to teach central syllabi.
