Committee to celebrate Mangalore Airport diamond jubilee all year

Mangalore, March 11, 2011: K. Thejomaya, the former chairman of MUDA, said that the Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee will hold a year’s celebration in Mangalore in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of Mangalore Airport. He was addressing reporters at a press meet held at Hotel Woodlands on March 11, Friday. 

Further, he said that the late Ullala Shrinivas Mallya played a key role in the establishment of this airport and that Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India, inaugurated it on Dec 21, 1951 when he landed at Mangalore Airport from Delhi.

Revealing details of the year-long programme, he said that it will continue till Dec 21, 2011 and has been planned under the able guidance of Dr. M. Veerappa Moily. 

Mr. Vayalar Ravi, the union minister of overseas Indian affairs and civil aviation, will inaugurate the diamond jubilee celebrations, which will be held by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the auditorium of St. Aloysius High School on March 13, Sunday. The chief guest will be Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, the minister for law and justice. The guests of honor will be Deputy Speaker N. Yogish Bhat, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Udupi MP D. V. Sadananda Gowda, MP Oscar Fernandes, and Moodubidri MLA K. Abhayachandra Jain.

Mr. Thejomaya also said that Mangalore University will sponsor a 2-day seminar titled “Indian Aviation and Tourism: Opportunities, Challenges, and New Directions” on April 23 – 24. The Coastal District Rural Sports Meet will be held in May 2011 and the Cultural and Folk Week for School and College Students and Women will be held in July – August. A 2-day national symposium titled “Modern Invention Constructed at Mangalore Airport” in collaboration with NIT-K Suratkal will be held in October. A state-level sports competition featuring weightlifting and kabbadi will be held in November. The valedictory ceremony of the diamond jubilee celebration will be held at Kenjar New Airport in December 2011, he said. 

Prabhakar and Fascal Pinto were also present at the press meet.
