Collage of RSS photos on police website causes concern

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 27, 2012: The homepage of the DK district police website, accessible at http://www.dkpolice.org, displays a collage of photographs showing RSS volunteers their khaki uniforms, engaged in various activities.

Police websiteThis collage has caused concern in society, especially as government bodies such as the police department are supposed to be secular in nature. The fact that the district police website displays RSS photographs has created alarm in the district, which has already been the victim of religious fundamentalism. It may be recalled that a pub and several churches in the district were attacked allegedly by pro-Hindu outfits.

The DK police department is the first in the state to use the Internet to connect with the public. B. Dayananda, former superintendent of police, started a blog called spdk.blogspot.com, and the website was launched in 2009. SP Abhishek Goyal is revamping the site.

The collage has been displayed for over a year and over 2 lakh visitors have viewed it, but Mr. Goyal claimed that he is totally unaware of this. Calling it a bad mistake, he said that the website is being re-launched and Zest Wings of Hyderabad have agreed to revamp the site free of cost. Expressing his opinion that the developers must have used random pictures for testing, he said that the police will take immediate action.

Shortly after the media noticed this fact, the website disappeared. Anybody who tries to access http://www.dkpolice.org will now see a single page with the message “This site is under construction.”

A. R. Infant, in-charge DG & IGP for Karnataka, said that he was unaware of the collage. He promised that he will conduct an enquiry.
