Civil Aviation Secretary Nambiar unveils memorial to plane crash victims

Mangalore, July 27:  A memorial was installed for the 158 victims of the Mangalore plane crash of May 22 on July 27, Tuesday at Kenjar in Bajpe. The memorial was unveiled by M. M. Nambiar, the civil aviation secretary.

 

 

 

 

The Air India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have jointly paid homage to the victims by installing six slabs of black granite on an elevated structure bearing the names of the people who died in the crash. The names of the cabin crew and the passengers have been inscribed separately on the slabs.

Aravind Jadhav, the managing director of AI, said that the installing a memorial at the site of the crash was the least they could do to pay homage to the departed souls of the plane crash victims. The memorial will also serve as a reminder of the bitter lessons learned from the tragedy, he said. Aravind said that Air India has extended all the required supports to the families of air crash victims. When the journalists raised a question about the status of the Board of Enquiry he said that the entire report will be out within three months without any delay. Highlighting the discontent by some family members of victims who faced problems at the time of claiming compensation, Jadav clarified that there are lots of documents to be filled by the families and Air India can not neglect the relevant documents in disbursing the compensation, he added.

M. R. Vasudev,  the director of Mangalore International Airport; Chellam Prasad, the station manager of AI; the staff of AI; and the family members, friends, and relatives of the plane crash victims placed floral tributes at the memorial.
