Mangalore, January 29: In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of DK District, Mangalore, the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese, on behalf of the Christian community of DK, has sought security and protection to the lives and properties of the members of the Christian community in DK.

Mlore Diosece letter

The immediate cause for the official letter seeking protection is the recent attack on churches and religious institutions in Mysore and Bhatkal. The bishop also directs attention to the fact that the Christian community has not yet recovered from the shock of the attacks of Sept 14, 2008. The incidents of Mysore and Bhatkal only serve to increase feelings of bitterness and anguish in the hearts of the members of the Christian community stated the letter.

The bishop also expressed apprehension that the events of Sept 14, 2008 might be repeated if fundamentalist forces are allowed to target Christian churches and institution. The letter stated that the Christian community wishes to avoid such incidents at any cost because of the violence and destruction they cause. The letter stressed the need for protection and for proper precautionary and preventive measures to prevent any more attacks in the nature of the recent attacks in Mysore and Bhatkal.

The bishop, on behalf of the Christian Community, ended his letter by requesting the district administration to provide immediate proper protection for their religious, charitable, medical, and educational institutions and also for all the members of the community.
