Udupi, Oct 21, 2017: A 56 year old man from Ambalpady has lost Rs 1,37,500 after falling victim to an online fraud.
It is said the victim Sanjeeva Balkur had befriended a woman named Lisa Cole through social media. The woman who reportedly arrived in Delhi from London on September 13 had telephoned Sanjeeva stating that she is being quizzed by customs officials as she had brought a DD for one lakh pounds with the intention of making purchases in India. She later made an appeal to Sanjeeva to deposit Rs 42,500 to a particular bank account. Believing her, Sanjeeva followed the instruction. The next day he received a call from a person who introduced himself as a customs officer at Delhi Airport and demanded Rs 75000 for High Court verification and conversion of the DD of Lisa to Indian rupees. He also stated that Lisa has been held at a guest house. Sanjeeva followed this instruction too.
Since then there has been no trace of the girl as Sanjeeva could not contact her. Realising that he has been cheated, Sanjeeva lodged a complaint with the Udupi Police who have booked a case under IT Act.
