Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Jan 03, 2017: DK District In-charge and Forest, Environment and Ecology Minister B Ramanath Rai expressed displeasure over procrastination by the National Highways division of the State Public Works Department (PWD) in carrying out the second phase of Shiradi Ghat road development work.

Charmadi Ghat ...

Chairing a meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office in Mangaluru on Jan 2, Monday, Minister Rai said the National Highways officials were supposed to convene a meeting with the elected representatives, Police Department, district administration and the persons concerned, regarding the modus operandi of Shiradi Ghat road development works. But, nothing has been done in this regard so far. The work should be meticulously planned, he said. Rai said that the complete closure of the road during the work may cause a great deal of inconvenience for people and hence, there is a need to make an option for an alternative route.

National Highways official Ramesh said the company which has bagged the tender of the work was supposed to procure materials by October 2016. The work order was issued on November. The contract was of the EPC model where the contract availer has to design and execute the work. According to the company, only 43% materials have been procured so far. Some high-end machinery which have to be imported are yet to arrive and therefore, some more time is needed, he said.

Responding to a query, he said there are provisions for the company to give 70% sub-contract to another firm. If the work start within 10 days from now, the road development can be completed before monsoon, he said and added that the expected progress is not seen. Rai directed the officials to speed up the procedures towards the road widening in Melkar in Bantwal, for which Rs 1.35 crore has been sanctioned. Also, he told the officials to prepare a blueprint for a private bus stand in Bantwal in an area of 41 cents and hand over it to Bantwal Town Municipal Council.

The NH executive engineer said that a proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways with regard to the widening of Charmadi Ghat stretch. It will take another three years for the work on Charmadi Ghat to start, he said. Reacting to a question by the Minister, the official said, the NH has submitted a detailed project report. After getting the approval from the ministry, an estimate needs to be prepared. The whole process would take at least three years,” he said. DK DC Dr K G Jagadeesha, SP Bhushan G Borase and Additional DC Kumar were present along with officials. .
