The supporters of Ivan D’Souza, who is aspiring for a ticket for the upcoming elections, grabbed the opportunity to add to the chaos by shouting slogans.

This soon developed into an intense physical fight between the two groups. Ashraf tried to pacify P. V. Mohan, member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), but Mohan shoved Ahsraf. A furious Ashraf then attacked P. V. Mohan, after which there was total chaos. Some Congress workers even threw chairs at their leaders. According to an eyewitness, the fight lasted at least 10 minutes.

Although peace was restored after sometime and the formal ceremony began, Ivan D’Souza’s supporters continued shouting slogans every now and then.

Obviously, the fight was planned well in advance although no Congress leader or worker admitted it.

Among those on the dais were Ramanath Rai, J. R. Lobo, and Ivan D’Souza, Congress youth leaders Mithun Rai and Praveenchandra Alva; Moideen Bawa, party leader; and Gulzar Banu, the mayor of Mangalore.

Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of the event, Praveenchandra Alva, Congress youth leader, said that the senior Congress leaders did not get the approval of Congress workers and presidents of various Congress sections such as the youth wing, the minority wing, and the women’s wing before accepting J. R. Lobo into the party.
