Mangaluru, Nov 16, 2014 : Speaking to media on November 14,Friday, Mayor Mahabala Marla has said that City Library a tLightHouse Hill has been modernised and has a separate section for children/students. He stated that it has a well-stocked children’s section that caters to the likes of children.There are around 3,000 books in Kannada and English for children along with playmaterials.
He said that District Lions 317D and district Lioness associations have given six computers to thel ibrary. The browsing centre has been started in the library and the readers can browse for one hour by paying Rs10. The library also provides reference books for aspirants of KAS/IAS/CET/Bank exams/GRE/MAT/SAT and other competitive exams. About 2,500 books worth Rs10lakh have been added to the library in 2013-14. Along with books in Kannada, English, Hindi, Tulu, Konkani and Urdu languages,the library committee has decided to have books in Beary language as well.
The Mayor saidt hat the mobile library was introduced in 1987. As the vehicle was old and worn out, the local library authority has decided to dispose it off and purchase a new vehicle. A sum of Rs 25 lakh has been earmarked for the purpose. e-tender will be invited for the purchase vehicle and mobile library will be ready by January. The central library has15 libraryunits,one library at ESIhospital, one at community children’s centre, one at district jail and a mobile library.
The National Library Week will be organised at the Central library on November 17 at 11 am.
MLA J R Lobo will inaugurate the celebrations.Litterateur Siddalingaiah will be the chiefguest. As a part of the library week,competitions like ‘Trash to treasure’ drawing competitions,pick and speak, fancy dress,elocution,reading Kannada fluently, essay writing,story telling competitions were held at four libraries in Mangaluru on Nov 14 Friday. On November15— action song, painting, patriotic song, essay writing (Kudroli library), pick and speak and painting(Gandhinagara), painting, essay (silvergate),painting and essay writing (Kadri) competitions will be held. On November 16, painting contest will be held at Surathkal and essay writing at Pragathinagara.
The library was developed at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, said the Mayor. More children and students are expected to use the updated form of this library in the city centre.
