Mangaluru, April 7, 2015: Bishop of Mangalore Rev Dr. Aloysius P D’Souza,  after the Easter Vigil Mass at the Rosario Cathedral  made a solemn announcement. Thanking  the Vicar of Rosario and all others who contributed and helped in renovating and making the century old Cathedral (1915-2915) a renewed  edifice of great aesthetic beauty and blessing to Mangalore diocese.  He announced that the centenary celebrations of the Rosario Cathedral edifice is set to be celebrated in a fitting manner from April 9 to the 12. The final valedictory will be on April 12, 2015 and will be a land mark day at Rosario with many dignitaries gracing the occasion.  He and the Vicar asked all people of the parish and others to participate, co-operate and make it a memorable occasion so that it will not be forgotten for another hundred years to come at least.  

 

The 445 year old premier Parish of Mangalore proper, Rosario, embarked on it’s year long Centenary observance of the dedication (in 1915) of the magnificent Cathedral edifice, Sunday March 2, 2014.  The solemn occasion began with the unveiling of the meaningful ’Centenary Logo’ reproduced here. Now a historic journey in reaching a fruitful end; the  grand finale is on April 12, 2015. As a run up to this great day  celebrations and spiritual observances were held on April 9, 10 & 11, 2015.

’Mangalore Today’  has over the last few years closely kept it’s readers informed about the historicity of this great edifice and it’s fore runners. Be it’s first parish priest Fr. Urban Stein, the great institutions that this church has been a cradle to, chiefly the Ursuline Franciscan Congregation and Apostolic Carmel, the association it has with St.Joseph Vaz recently Canonized.  And the many institutions that it now proudly hosts and in turn support it as well. Many people are associated with it over the years. It is the official seat of the Bishop of Mangalore and so it gained the title of "Cathedral" in 1850. Most of the past Bishops of Mangalore are buried around the main alter here. Thus it’s historic value is invaluable. All the aspects will be commemorated and remembered during the ’Centenary Celebrations" from April 9 to April 12, 2015. The venue will be the sprawling Cathedral premises.
