Speaking during a press conference held at the commissioner’s chamber at Mangalore City Corporation on April 13, Tuesday, he said that this will be the 17th census to be conducted in India after Independence. He requested all citizens to support the census and to make it successful.

He informed journalists that 18 officers will be placed in charge of 868 blocks and that each block will be divided into several blocks. At the district level, a nodal officer will be appointed for 2-3 wards and 136 supervisors will be positioned.

Members of self-help groups will render special support to the Mangalore City Corporation, he said, adding that the MCC will conduct a special training programme for them from May 9 – 11. Publicity will be given to the forthcoming census through print and electronic media, he said.

The census will commence on April 15 at the house of the first citizen of Mangalore, Mayor Rajani Dugganna, and will continue till the end of May. Since information must be collected for the National Population Register, one enumerator can complete only 5-6 houses per day. However, one enumerator ought to complete 150 – 200 houses; therefore, they cannot waste any time and must complete the census of houses that are not locked during their first visit, he said.

The commissioner said that the members of self-help groups have been advised to visit the houses either early in the mornings or late in the evenings. Reserve enumerators have also been appointed in case of absence or ill health. Although the original population within MCC limits is 3.96 lakhs, after considering the additional area, it comes up to 4.24 lakhs, he informed.

The commission will be acting as the principal census officer for Mangalore city area during the entire course of the census.
