Mangaluru, Mar 23, 2015 : The district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) has called upon the district administration not to allow the collection of toll from vehicles till the widening of National Highway 66 works were completed in Udupi district.
Deviprasad Shetty, president of district unit of the JD(S), said that though the widening work of NH 66 had started about a decade ago, it has made no progress real. He also claimed that toll gates were being constructed within 60 kilometres of one another. As per regulations two toll gates within the distance of 60 kilometres is not permitted.
In the “masterplan” prepared by the NHAI - National Highways Authority of India, the widened highway was to provide for turning spaces for vehicles, and service roads, storm water drains, bus stands at a distance of 10 kilometre, proper connection to feeder roads, flyovers, underpasses, big bridges. But this had not been made public and plans are not followed sufficiently.
