CM signs papers for formation of State Religious Council -Dr. V. S. Acharya

Udupi, July 11, 2011:Dr. V. S. Acharya, the minister for religious endowment, said that CM B. S. Yeddyurappa has signed the documents facilitating the forming of a Rajya Dharmika Parishad. He was addressing reporters at the brand new Pathrika Bhavan at Nairkere in Ajjarkad on Sunday.

The minister also laid the foundation stone for the new Vaartha Bhavan, which is to be constructed beside Patrika Bhavan at the estimated cost of Rs. 50 lakh.

Stating that certain sections of the Common Religious Endowment Act have been challenged in the Supreme Court and that the authority of the government to make appointments to the administrative committees of temples has been questioned, he said that the Supreme Court has directed the government to amend the Karnataka Religious and Charitable Institutions Act. He said that the required amendments have been made and submitted to the Governor for his approval.

He also said that the government has been asked to form the State Religious Council and that the CM signed documents regarding this on Friday.

The 8-member council will comprise dharmadarshis of different temples, the minister for religious endowment, and its government secretary. This council will be given the power to appoint the administrative bodies of all temples.

In the second stage, district-level religious councils will be formed, comprising the district judge, the agama shastra experts, SC/ST representatives, and backward class representatives, he said.
