Mangalore , May 20: MLA U. T. Khader said during a press conference held at the district Congress office on May 20, Sunday that CM B. S. Yeddyurappa has agreed to the proposal of the principal secretary of PWD and the CGM (T) NHAI to reduce the ROW from 60m to 45m on the NH17 stretch from Surathkal – Kundapur and Kundapur – Goa-Karnataka border. The CM has also expressed his desire for quick action on NHAI land acquisition in Karnataka and has decided to limit the width of the national highways to 45m in urban areas and 60m in rural areas in future, he added.

The CM has also agreed with the CGM (T) NHAI that bypass at both locations is the best solution from the technical, social, economical, and functional points of view. Widening of the existing highway will cause large-scale demolition of existing structure and displacement of people. The CM stated that an elevated highway is technically and economically not feasible and that bypass is the best solution.

Speaking about flyovers, he said that people hardly realize where the flyover begins and ends. Khader express his concern over the fact that MUDA and MCC have handed over the flyover construction work to contractors, who have not made a study of the problems that might arise for the people.

The MLA added that the NHAI has made a comprehensive study of the problems caused the NH17 widening work, successfully explained the same to the CM, and even obtained his approval. Several MLAs including Ramanath Rai and Abhayachandra Jain have fully supported the NHAI regarding this issue, said Khader.

Eshwar Ullal, Dinesh Rai, Ibrahim KC Road, Sudhir, and Nazeer Bajal were also present during the press conference.
