Belthangady.Oct 19, 2011: A CBI team, comprising a deputy superintendent and 4 circle inspectors, has been assigned the task of investigating the mysterious death of Fr. James Mukalel, a priest of the Syrian Catholic church in Belthangady. It may be recalled that Fr. Mukalel’s body was found in July 2009.

The team was originally assigned the joint task of inquiring into the deaths of city-based lawyer Naushad Kashimji and Fr. James Mukalel. But now, the high court has placed a temporary stay in the enquiry on the death of Naushad Kashimji, owing to which the team will concentrate on the death of Fr. Mukalel.

Fr. James

Fr. James, the priest of St. Mary Church in Kutruppadi, Belthangady, had gone to attend a funeral ceremony on July 29, 2009, after which he had visited the sick in and around Totattadi. At night, he visited the convent at Charmadi and had his dinner there. He told the nuns that he was going to Kadaba and left the convent at 9:30 p.m. The next day, his naked body was found lying beside his motor bike

The CBI team collected information from the city police on Monday. They received the high court stay on inquiry into Kashimji’s death when they were conducting the investigation.
