CAI South Zone Chess Tournament: Malleshwara Rao bags Panama Trophy

Mangalore, October 15, 2011: J Malleswara Rao of A.P. has won the ‘Panama’ Trophy and a cash prize of Rs.25,000 by scoring 7 points in 8 rounds in the CAI South Zone Chess Tournament organized by King’s Academy, Mangalore on behalf of Karnataka State Chess Association at Srinivasa Kalyana Mantap, VT Road, Mangalore.

 

 

 

 

Rohan Shandilya of Karnataka, who scored 6.5 points after his draw in the final round against Malleshwara Rao, is the runner up and won a cash prize of Rs15,000.

Vanessa D’Souza won the 3rd place with 6.5 points and was awarded Rs10,000. Abdul Majeed (Kerala), P. Satyanarayana (AP), Rejah (Kerala), Ramalingam (TN) KN Rajan (Kerala), and Anish Charith Bhandary (Karnataka) were placed in 4th to 9th places respectively with 6 points each. Akash M of Karnataka was placed in the 10th place with 5.5 points.

Reesha Shenoy won the best woman player prize. Saurav M Boloor, Naman M Shetty, Arjun Adappa and Anuttham A. won the Under 16, 14, 12 and 10 category prizes respectively.

Smt. Geetha N Nayak, the deputy mayor of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC); Mr. Deric Pinto, the president Karnataka State Chess Association; Sri Anand G, the president of BVSSS Bank; Sri Prasanna Rao, the joint secretary of Chess Association of India; and Ln Suresh Rai distributed prizes to the winners. Smt Vijaya Adappa, Radesh Shenoy, Praveen Kamath, and Victor D’souza, all office bearers of King’s Academy, were present on the dais.

The tournament was held in an 8-round Swiss league system. A prize pool worth Rs 2,00,000 was distributed among the players.
