Byari wins bronze medal at SAARC Film Awards 2012

Mangalore, May 22, 2012: Byari, a Beary film, has won the bronze medal in the feature film category of the SAARC Film Awards of 2012, and Saving Face, a Pakistani movie on victims of acid attacks, won the best documentary prize. The awards ceremony was held in Colombo last night.

Byari, the first Beary movie, is the only Indian movie that won a prize at the award ceremony. Produced by Althaf Hussain and directed by K. P. Suveeran, Byari shared India’s Best Film for 2011 Award with the Marathi movie Devool.

Saving Face, which was co-directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, won the Oscar Award earlier this year. The film is about a plastic surgeon of British-Pakistani origins who corrects the faces of female victims of acid attacks. Ramchand Pakistani, directed by Pakistani director Mehreen Jabbar, won the silver medal in the feature film category.

Pakistani actors Rashid Farooqi and Manzar Sehbai shared the Best Actor Award for roles played in Ramchand Pakistani and Bol, respectively. Akasa Kusum, a Shri Lankan movie directed by Prasanna Vithanage, bagged the best feature film trophy.

The Great School Teacher, a Shri Lankan movie directed by Mayri Wanaguru, was the runner up in the documentary category. Shri Lanka’s Malini Fonseka won the Best Actress Award for her role in the movie Akasa Kusum and Morshedul Islam, a Bangaldeshi director, won the Best Director Award for his film Khelaghar.

The SAARC Film Awards received nominations from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Shri Lanka, and Maldives. Famous film directors from Iran, Singapore, and Russia were the judges who selected the best of these nominations in the documentary film and feature film categories.

The festival attracted directors from India, Bangladesh, Maldives, and India. A workshop titled “Film vs. Digital – The Impending Extinction of the Celluloid Cinema and the Challenges Ahead” formed part of the award ceremony.
