Bus, auto workers unions in undivided DK support Feb 20, 21 general strike

Bharath BundMangalore, Feb 19, 2013: Various trade unions namely CITU, BMS, AITUC, INTUC and the HMS in the district have supported the two-day nationwide strike call given on February 20 and 21 by eleven central trade unions and workers’ federations against the government’s “inaction” on price rise and alleged violation of labour laws.


The  labour unions affiliated to the above organisaations have given a call for a bus and autorickshaw bundh in  DK and Udupi districts. However, Canara  Bus Operators’ Association and Udupi City Bus Operators’ Association have said they do not support the strike. Meanwhile, the United Forum of Bank Employees Union in DK and  Udupi districts has pledged its  support to the strike.


Bus staff to support strike : Vasanth Achari, General Secretary of the Motor Transport and Engineering Workers Union, affiliated to the CITU, has said employees of all  private buses as well as  tempo, lorry and car drivers will participate in the strike by remaining off the roads.


  The Canara Bus Operators Association which has decided not to support the strike, has said that commuters will be hit hard as there are a number weddings, functions etc on the two days.  It has said the buses will ply as usual in the two districts.


Autos to remain off roads : Sunil Kumar Bajal, District President of Federation of Karnataka Autorickshaw Drivers (CITU) and LT Suvarna have said the Federation would support the strike.


United Forum of Bank Employees Union has said that over 25000 bank employees and officials  would  participate in the strike.


The strike has been called jointly by the Bharatiya Majdoor Sangh, All India Trade union Congress, All India Trade Union Congress, Hind Mazdoor Sabha, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, All India United Trade Union Centre and other such organisations.
