Broom protest by Jokatte residents demanding shutting down of MRPL coke, sulphur units

Mangaluru, Mar 07, 2018: The Citizens’ Action Committee of Jokatte and Anti-MRPL Action Committee of Suratkal staged a Broom Protest  in front of the DC office on March 7, Wednesday against MRPL and demanded that  the company’s coke and sulphur units  should be locked up for violating the government directive  to check the pollution caused by its fly ash.

The protestors also alleged that the  apathetic attitude of the MPRL management has  wreaked havoc on the  environment of   Jokatte, Kalavaru areas making life hell-like for the locals.  The fly ash from the coke and sulphur units has contaminated the water sources, they pointed out and alleged that the government directive on April 2016 to the company to initiate remedial measures have failed to yield result.

The speakers during the protest also said it was alarming to note that the company was planning a fourth phase expansion by acquiring 1000 acres of farm land.

The protestors demanded  that the fourth phase expansion should not be permitted and urged for steps to  ensure that the  company  adhered to the government directive of April 2016.

The protestors earlier took out a procession  from near the Mini Vidhana Saudha to the DC office where they staged a broom protest

Action Committee Convenor B S Hussain, Jokatte GP Vice President Samshuddin, DYFI State President Muneer Katipalla, District Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal, SFI leader Nitin Kuttar and others took part in the protest.
