Mangalore Mar 3, 2016: A book on the life and times of well-known freedom fighter Kumbra Jathappa Rai titled “On the trail of Gandhiji’s Footsteps- Odyssey of Jathappa Rai" will be released on March 17 at University College, Mangalore.
Speaking to the press at Press Club on March 3, Thursday, senior writer Erya Laxminarayana Alva said that the revered freedom fighter Jathappa Rai had the unique honour of administering the oath to the public of Puttur on 15th August, 1947.
Jathappa Rai was disillusioned by the Congress attitude of indifference towards the peasants and workers in the immediate post independence era, Alva recalled and said Rai had even moved away from the Congress for a short while during the fifties.
Erya Laxminarayana Alva has edited the book which consists of articles from journalists, writers, poets, judges, bureaucrats, politicians and social workers.
