Mangalore, Sep 17: District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar inaugurated a special book release ceremony jointly organized by the Kannada and Cultural Department and the Veerarani Abbakka Utsava Committee at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Law College on September 17 Saturday to release a book on Rani Abbakka titled Abbakka Sankanthana. 


Speaking on the need to popularize Rani Abbakka at the state level, he said that Abbakka Sankanthana is a very precious book for the people of the district and will help children learn more about freedom fighters based in DK. He also urged the committee to conduct research on Rani Abbakka and organize state-level events on her achievements.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that one must remember the life and achievements of Rani Abbakka who saved India from the Portuguese. He also lamented that the younger generation keep photographs of movie stars, but are hardly aware of real stars such as Bhagat Singh and Rani Abbakka.


Dr. B. Jayashree, the senior theatre artiste who released the book, said that the life and history of Abbakka should be studied in detail and should also be in introduced into school text books.


Further, she said that Abbakka Utsav should be celebrated at the national level so that the greatness of the queen can be popularized further. 


Mr. Palemar felicitated senior litterateurs Amrutha Someshwar, Dr. Vaman Nandavar, Prof. A. V. Navada, Dr. Shaila, B. M. Rohini, Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli, Abdul Azeez Haq, and D. N. Raghava, the editors of Abbakka Sankanthana, on the occasion. 


Speaking about the newly released book, Amrutha Someshwar said that it comprises 400 pages of information regarding the 8 previously held Abbakka Utsavas, introductions to Abbakka Award winners, historical documents, and other information. Around one-fourth of the book comprises colored pages, he said, adding that the preface has been written by Dr. B. A. Vivek Rai, the visiting professor of Wurzburg University Germany. 


Deputy Speaker N. Yogesh Bhat presided over the event and said that studies conducted on Abbakka can help build the nation, adding that the government programme should be transformed into a social programme. 


Dr. Palthady Ramakrishna Achar, the president of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy; Mayor Praveen Anchan; and many other prominent citizens participated in the event.
