Mangalore, July 19: Bajpe Deranna, the senior Yakshagana artiste specializing in the Thenkuthittu Bayalata Mela, received the Bolur Dogra Poojary Award 2011 on July 19.

The award was conferred on him in the presence of Kumble Sundar Rao, the legendary Yakshagana artiste; Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, the district president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishad; Damodara Nisarga, the president of the Bolur Dogra Poojary Memorial Yakshagana Centre; and B. Madhukumar Nisarga at a special programme organized at Ravindra Kalabhavan, Mangalore University College.

The Bolur Dogra Poojary Award comprises a shawl, a citation, and a cheque for Rs. 10,000.

The panel of judges included Prof. Amrutha Someshwar, Kumble Sundar Rao, Dr. Palthadi Ramakrishna Achar, Madhukumar Nisarga, and Kadri Navaneeth Shetty.

Bajpe Deranna, who is now 73 years old, has worked as a Yakshagana dance master. He has also contributed a lot to Suratkal, Ullala Cheerumbha Bhagavathi, Kudroli Sunkadakatte, and Talakala Yakshagana Melas.

He is widely renowned for playing female roles such as Dakshayani, Pramile, Shridevi, Draupadi, and others as well as for playing male roles such as Shri Rama, Abhimanyu, Babruvahana, and Shri Krishna.
