Bishop lays foundation stone for 28 houses for the poor

Mangalore, Aug 16, 2012 : Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore Diocese, laid the foundation stone for 28 houses for the poor near Mariashram Church, Talapady, on August 15, Wednesday.

Constructing houses for the poor is one of the projects undertaken by the Mangalore Diocese. Naveen Cardoza of Marian Projects Pvt. Ltd. has expressed willingness to construct these houses without any profit.

Addressing the gathering, the bishop said that the houses will be presented to the poor free of cost, adding that this is the diocese’s way of satisfying the basic requirements of the poor. He said that Rs. 12 lakh will be spent on constructing each house on a 4.15-cent plot.

The Mangalore Diocese had launched its project of constructing houses for the poor as part of its post-centenary silver jubilee celebrations. The diocese plans to construct a total of 161 houses for the poor and recently inaugurated the 100th house in Ranipura.

CODP Director Fr. Onil D’Souza spoke about the project.

Among those present were Fr. Nelson Olivera, priest of Mariashram Church; Naveen Cardoza; Four Wings Director Elias Fernandes; Sushil Noronha, secretary of the jubilee celebration committee; Felix Albuquerque; Fr. J. B. Crasta; and others.

Anitha D’Souza and Jacintha D’Souza, the beneficiaries of the project, were also present.
