Bishop felicitates Catholic members of ZP and TP

Mangalore, Mar 13: Rev. Fr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore, felicitated the newly elected Zilla Panchayat (ZP) and Taluk Panchayat (TP) members of the Catholic community at a special felicitation programmed arranged in Mangalore on March 13, Sunday. The occasion was a convention of laity organizations of the diocese held in the Milagres Senate Hall by the Catholic Sabha of Mangalore in collaboration with the Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK).

The bishop presided over the event and honored 19 elected TP and ZP members with shawls and flowers. He also felicitated Mr. Dolphy D’Souza for generously giving away his ticket to Melwyn D’Souza, who got elected from Bondanthila ZP. Mr. D’Souza delivered the keynote address on the occasion. Leo Lewis, the political leader from Karwar, also addressed the gathering.

In his keynote address, Mr. Dolphy D’Souza spoke of the need for unity among members of the community, adding that the community should give fitting responses to any false allegation of conversion. He also expressed his gratitude to Ronald Colaco, the NRI businessman and entrepreneur, for providing financial assistance to candidates at the time of elections. He also urged CASK and Catholic Sabha to provide financial assistance to those desiring political careers. He also expressed his appreciation of Rohan Monteiro, a young entrepreneur, for helping the members of his community.

Urging the members of the community to make sacrifices whenever necessary and use all the facilities available to them as minorities, he said that the community has to grow and develop as a powerful economic power.

In his address, Mr. Lewis spoke of the need for leadership in the community. Fr. J. B. Crasta also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Derek Lobo, the president of CASK and Elroy introduced the speakers to the audience.

The Catholic Sabha’s official website www.amchosandesh.com was inaugurated by Fr. Vincent Monteiro, the spiritual director of the Catholic Sabha.

Rudolf Tauro of St. Vincent de Paul Society, Fr. Anil D’Souza of ICYM, Ms. Lilly Periera of Catholic Association of South Kanara, M. P. Noronha of the Catholic Lawyers Guild, Colin Mathaias of the Christian Planters’ Guild, Jessy Tavera of the Ladies Social Service, Terry Pais of the DCCW, J. S. Noronha of the Catholic Chamber of Commerce, Nigel Periera of the Catholic Sabha and others presented brief reports of the achievements of their organizations.
