Billava community/VHP demand COD probe into athlete Prithvi’s death

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Oct 19, 2011 : The Billava community organized a protest in front of the DCs office in Udupi demanding an inquiry into the death of talented athlete Prithvi Amparu, who hanged herself in her room in the SMS Sports Hostel last month.

PrithiviPramod Madhwaraj, the president of the Block Congress, flayed police apathy toward the suicide and said that the investigation is being conducted in a half-hearted manner. He said that those responsible for Prithvi’s death are influential and are trying to wield their influence over the police.

Accusing certain “influential people” of pressurizing the police not to investigate the matter deeply, he said that the police must perform their duties without coming under influence or pressure and punish the guilty irrespective of their social and financial status.

Harikrishna Bantwal, the Billava leader, said that the police have failed miserably, adding that police should be ashamed for their failure to bring out the truth.

Demanding that the COD should handle the case, he said that the Billava community will intensify its protest if the government does not agree to hand over the case to the COD. He said that there is enough evidence to show that Prithvi did not commit suicide, but was murdered.

The community submitted memorandums to Alok Mohan, the IGP of western range; SP Dr. Y. S. Ravikumar, and DC Dr. M. T. Reju.

Meanwhile, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has also demanded a COD probe into the death of Prithvi Amparu. Premananda Shetty, the president of the VHP district, demanded that the COD should investigate the case as the police have failed.

Although Dr. V. S. Acharya, the higher education minister, has ordered a high-level probe into the death, there have been no results. He urged for proper investigation and punishment for the criminals involved in the death of the athlete.
