Mangalore, February 11: BJP candidates Vijayalakshmi Shetty and Bhavya Gangadhara Poojary have been elected as the vice president and president of Mangalore Taluk Panchayat (TP), respectively.

Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti and TP Executive Officer Vishwanath Poojary conducted the elections at the TP auditorium on Feb 10, Thursday. The most interesting feature of this election is that both candidates won by only one vote. They each bagged 19 votes while their Congress opponents won 18 votes each.


Surekha Chandrahas and Maria Lavina Vegas of the Congress had also contested the post of president and vice president, respectively.


Bhavya and Vijayalakshmi are the representatives of Kalla Mundkuru and Ganjimutt constituencies, respectively.


President Bhavya told reporters that she will give top priority to the implementation of all the government schemes in the taluk and solve title deed issues. Vice President Vijayalakshmi said that she intends to give top priority to issues such as street lights, drinking water, and roads.


Bhavya, the wife of Gangadhar Poojary of Kalla Mundkur, graduated from Besant Women’s College in Mangalore. Vijayalakshmi, the wife of Booba Shetty of Mogaru Kere in Ganjimutt, has been the member of the Ganjimutt GP thrice. She is also the president of the Ganjimutt Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society, the president of the Dharmasthala Gramabhivriddhi Yojana Okkoota, and the president of the Dharmasthala Gramabhivriddi Yojana Okkoota Association.


All the top posts of the ZP, TP, and the Mangalore City Corporation are now occupied by women. While the president’s post was reserved for a woman of the general category, the post of vice president was reserved for a woman of the BCM (B) category.
