Bhatkal, April 18: The Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) believes that the Bhatkal brothers, who belong to the Indian Mujahideen, are responsible for the German Bakery blast of Feb 13, which killed 17 people and injured 60 others. Bhatkal is the home of at least 10 of the most-wanted terrorist suspects.

Bhatkal, located at a distance of 150kms to the north of Mangalore, along NH17, has attracted the attention of investigating agencies throughout the country. Home of the Navayat Muslim community, majority of its residents are extremely prosperous and have relatives working in Gulf countries.

Bhatkal is also the home of 10 terrorism suspects. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) and some other agencies have conducted intense investigations in Bhatkal and its surrounding areas for clues to the Pune blast, among other cases. The police suspect that the Indian Mujahideen (IM), alleged to be founded by Iqbal and his brother Riyaz Bhatkal, is responsible for the Pune blast. Besides these Bhatkal brothers, the police are looking for eight more terrorists from Bhatkal. They are Ahmed Sidi Bapa, Muhammed Hussain Farhan, Afif Jailani, Mohammed Gurfan, Abdul Khadir Sultan, Jasim Iqbal Syeedi, Abdul Majid, and Dr. Arif Motesham.

The first case of communal clash was reported in 1991, following a fiery speech by Uma Bharati, the BJP leader, in front of a mosque. Later in 1996, unknown miscreants shot dead BJP MLA Dr. Chittaranjan, which led to another communal riot. Ever since, the place has been a communally disturbed zone with Muslim fundamentalists and right-wing Hindu groups such as Bajrang Dal, Shriram Sena, and Hindu Rakshana Vedike vehemently voicing their opinions. The two groups are constantly clashing, a fact that might have attracted the Muslim youth toward terrorism, according to police sources.
