Mangalore, Jul 5: Normal life was disrupted in several parts of the country including Mangalore and Udupi during the ’’Bharat Bandh’’ called by a combined Opposition today in protest against fuel price hike. The commercial establishments in the city were closed down to avoid trouble. Though the 12-hour bundh ended at 6 p.m., the shops remained close for the entire day. Essential services such as milk and pharmacies were exempted from participating in the strike, in spite of which some of the pharmacies remained closed.
Public buses and autorickshaws did not ply, owing to which people could not move out of their houses and go for work. Very few employees could turn up for work at banks, post offices, and government offices. Private vehicles and few private taxies helped emergency support.
The bundh was peaceful and no untoward incidents were reported throughout these 12 hours.

Very few employees could turn up for work at banks, post offices, and government offices; however, this did not create any inconvenience because there were no customers too.
Referring to the bundh as a “total success,” MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that it was organized to bring the attention of the UPA government to the adverse effects of the recent hikes in fuel prices on the common people.
