Bengaluru-Karwar Express timings set to change, specials from Nov 10

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Nov 10, 2017: The expected diversion of Bengaluru-Karwar Night Express (Train No. 16523) via the shortest route — Shravanabelagola for four days a week from February 10 — will make the train reach Mangaluru Central and Karwar about two hours earlier to the existing timing.

Karwar Express...

Working to fulfil coastal residents’ demand for early arrival of the train, the South Western Railway (SWR) has said the train will arrive at 6.20 a.m. in Mangaluru Central instead of 8.20 a.m. and at 12.30 p.m. at Karwar instead of 2.15 p.m. However, the train will depart Bengaluru City Station at 7.15 p.m. instead of the present 8.30 p.m. The actual saving in travel time thus will be 30-45 minutes.

Sources in SWR said the train could not be speeded up further owing to speed restrictions (average 65 kmph) on the newly laid Nelamangala-Hassan line and crossing of Karwar-Bengaluru Night Express at Shiradi Ghat. The Engineering Department of SWR is likely to allow average speed of 100 kmph on Nelamangala-Hassan section in about six months, after which the train could be speeded up by another 45 minutes, sources said. The total journey hours will thus be 17.15 hours as against the present 17.45 hours.

At Bengaluru   :  However, passengers from the coast could reach Bengaluru at least by 1.25 hours early with a 16-hour journey. The Karwar-Bengaluru Express (Train No. 16524) departs Karwar and Mangaluru Central at the existing time of 2.55 p.m and 8.55 p.m. respectively to reach Bengaluru City at 6.55 a.m. instead of 8.20 a.m.  The notification announcing the new timetable will be issued in a day or two, sources added.

SWR had earlier proposed to operate the train from Yeshwantpur, despatching it at 10.30 p.m. following reluctance from Southern Railway and Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., to receive it early at Mangaluru Junction. Following sustained efforts by rail passenger groups, people’s representatives, and the media, SR and KRCL have now agreed to receive the train early.
