Beltangady, April 28: The Belthangady police have busted and petrol pilfering racket for the third time near Madanthyar on April 26, Monday. The police have also confiscated a tanker, a Chevrolet, and drilling equipment. Two persons who used to pilfer petrol from Petronet’s long-distance oil pipelines were arrested.

R Ramesh, Additional Superintendent of police, Dakshina Kannada district, told in a press meet held here on April 28 said that the  arrested are Cyril D’Mello of Moodushedde  and Rajesh Sequeira of Hosanagar. Srikanth Poojary, Harish, and Suresh Shetty are absconding. The culprits used to drill holes in the Petronet pipeline passing near Uppinangady – Madanthyar road, in an estate owned by Dr. Subramanya Ballal, to steal large quantities of petrol. The method used to steal the petrol was the same as in the previous cases, he said.


When Dr Ballal returned to his estate from Udupi on Monday night, he spotted diesel stains and empty cans all over the road. The local women had informed him that the surrounding area smelled of diesel. He contacted the MRPL landline, but the call was not answered. He then called the fire brigade, which in turn asked him to call the police. Sub Inspector Subba Puramat and other officers arrived on the scene and set a trap for the pilferers.  


On Monday night, some men arrived in a Maruti Zen and stopped near the estate. A Chevorlet and a tanker drove into the estate. The police team nabbed the cleaner and the tanker driver, but the people in the Maruti Zen made good their escape. C K Shashidar, the deputy superintendent of police, arrived on the spot on Tuesday morning. Police investigations continue.

A Cash prize of Rs 5000 has been given to police officers, who were involved in yesterday’s raid. B G Subba Pura Matt, sub inspector of Police, Belthangady, Gopal, head constable, Bhaskar, constable, Udaya Rai, Sundar Shetty, Venkatesh, Vrishabh, Shashidar and Kanakraj, constables were present in the operation.
B J Bhandary, DySp, C K Sashidhar, DySp, and B G Subbapura Mutt, SI, Belthangady  were present in the meeting.
