Mangalore, May 8, 2012:  The Karnataka State Beedi Workers’ Federation organized its 8th state convention at Town Hall on May 8, Tuesday. 


In his address, Mohammed Nizamuddin, the chief secretary of the All India Beedi Workers’ Federation, said that Indian workers must organize protests along the lines of the Wall Street protests that shook America. Stating that workers in several countries are fighting for their rights, he said that Indian workers too must fight for their rights.

He also said that a national conference of workers was held at Delhi in 2009, which included a number of movements such as jail bharo and others. 


Speaking about the beedie workers’ movement in Andhra Pradesh, he said that a number of comrades and MLAs have been killed in this movement. Stating that the working classes in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are getting more aware of their rights, he said that the situation is getting worse day by day as poverty is on the rise. Globalization has made the poor poorer and the rich richer, he added. 


Regarding the workers’ movement in West Bengal, he said that the Trinamool Congress has been behaving in the most unjust manner against the working classes. 


Stating that the beedie workers’ movement is the second most powerful movement in India, he said that the All India Beedie Workers’ Federation meeting will be held at Kanyakumari on May 11. 


Comrade Neela K., the vice president of Janavadhi Women’s Union, was the chief guest. Comrade B. Madhava, the president of the Karnataka State Beedie Workers’ Federation (CITU), presided over the event.
