Train Mangalore, Feb 26: The protests of Yathri Sanghas and other social and political bodies has received a partial positive response in that Union Railway Minister Mamatha Banerjee has announced that the Bangalore – Mangalore day train will be extended to Karwar. However, this might take two more months.

The Bangalore – Mangalore day train operates thrice weekly, leaving Yeshwanthpur on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and leaving Mangalore and Kannur on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

The schedule of the night train from Yeshwanthpur to Kannur through Mangalore will not be altered. The public’s request to divert a few compartments of this train to Karwar has been ignored.

R. L. Dais of Udupi said on Feb 26, Saturday that he had obtained information through RTI that the Kannur train has been undergoing a daily loss of Rs. 2 lakh. He expressed hopes that a writ petition demanding the extension of the night train to Karwar, which is now in the high court, will get a positive response.

Dais also said that the superfast Mumbai – Mangalore train will be converted into a daily train, which will leave Mumbai at 10:30 p.m. and reach Mangalore at 12:50 p.m. the following day. It will leave Mangalore at 2:00 p.m. and reach Mumbai at 4:30 a.m.
