Bajpe lady loses Rs 32L in online scams

Mangaluru, Nov 5, 2017: A woman from Bajpe has lost Rs 32 lakhs to online fraudsters who made her believe that she won a huge cash prize from a cellphone making company. Police said the woman had received a message June which stated that she won 4,85,000 US Dollars (nearly Rs 3 crore) in a contest conducted from a cellphone making company headquartered in California.

Believing the content, the woman replied to the message and the scamsters asked her to pay certain amount towards customs duty for the prize money. Accordingly she deposited the money in the account number the scamsters had sent to her. Later, they kept on asking money stating for documentation and other procedures to be followed.

When she did not get the prize money even a some time after remitting the money asked, she grew suspicious and filed a complaint at the cyber crime police station. Police said that woman had paid nearly Rs 32 lakh to fraudsters by taking loan and she had no clue about whose account she has deposited the money.

This is not the first instance. In June, a person from Maddyar near Kotekar had lost about Rs 21 lakhs to a similar fraud.
