Bad roads figure in ZP review meeting

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 22, 2011: At the quarterly meeting held at the Zilla Panchayat to review the Karnataka Development Programme today, it was revealed that Rs. 1.26 crore was released for the construction of a road in Amblamogaru in Mangalore, shortly after which Rs. 1 crore had to be released for its repair.

In spite of the notices sent to officials who were absent at the previous meeting, many of them were still absent. Only 3 elected representatives—MLAs U. T. Khader and Abhayachandra Jain and District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar—were present. MLC Kota Shrinivas Poojary arrived late.

Several issues were discussed at the meeting, chief of them being the lack of regular bus facilities in Chelar, Baikampady, Ira, and Manchi. KSRTC officials were directed to run bus facilities in rural areas, and the RTO said that several temporary permits have been issued to private buses so that they can provide services in remote areas.

Speaking on the bus facility issue, Khader said that most private buses are overcrowded because there are few buses, adding that RTO officials should be made responsible for any accidents that take place because of overcrowded buses.

A debate was held on the pending work of six roads coming under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana because of legal issues, which is causing a lot of inconvenience to the people of the area.

Regarding the delay in issuing temporary door numbers of poor families in rural areas, Palemar explained that the project is having teething problems.

Complaints regarding improper distribution of fertilizers and compensations to farmers were also discussed. There are allegations that certain private companies were stocking fertilizers released by the government for distribution among farmers and later selling them at higher rates. In response, Dr. Vijayaprakash, the CEO of ZP, said that vigilance squads will be formed to prevent such things from happening in the near future.

Regarding the pathetic condition of the Punjalkatte to Madanthyar stretch, highway authority representatives said that funds have already been released for the repair of the road and that the work was pending because of the rains.

It was also alleged that the ZP is conducting meetings just for name sake and that it is doing no serious work.

K. T. Shailaja Bhat, the president of the ZP; Dhanalaxmi, the vice president; and all the members of the standing committee were also present.
