Mangaluru, Feb 23, 2016: The BJP is riding high in the Zilla Panchayat elections, counting of which is being held on February 23, Tuesday. The party has won in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Zilla Panchayats. In Dakshina Kannada the party won in 21 seats, while the Congress has to be satisfied with just 15 seats.In Udupi Zilla Panchayat, the BJP won in 20 seats and the Congress in only 6 seats.
The process of counting of votes polled during the February 20 Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat elections commenced at various counting centres across DK and Udupi districts on February 23, Tuesday morning.
The first result in Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat brought cheers in the Congress camp when B K Abdul Jabbar was declared the winner. The BJP suffered a setback in Sajipamunnur where the party candidate and former district BJP Chief Padmanabha Kottary was defeated by Congress candidate Chandra Prakash Shetty. In Kolnad too Congress candidate MS Mohammad was the winner while in Perdoor in Udupi district , the BJP has suffered another setback with the defeat of former ZP Chief Shanker Poojary.
Elections were held to a total of 36 Zilla Panchayat and 136 Taluk Panchayat seats in Dakshina Kannada and 26 Zilla Panchayat and 98 Taluk Panchayat seats in Udupi districts.
Counting is underway at Mahatma Gandhi Centenary School, Bondel, Mangaluru, Infant Jesus English and Kannada Medium School, Modankapu, Bantwal, SDM PU College, Ujire, Vivekananda English Medium School, Tenkila, Puttur and Nehru Memorial College, Sullia.
In Golthamajalu Kamalakshi Poojary of BJP declared winner and in Maani Manjula Madhav Mane of Congress defeated KT Shailaja. Meanwhile in Puttige and Pudu Sucharitha Shetty and Ravindra of BJP declared winner respectively. In Sarapady, Neermarga and Kurnadu congress gained upperhand in which Padmashekar, Seema D’Souza and Mamatha Gatti declared to be victorious. While in Shirtady BJP candidate defeated Sumitra and in Yedapadav Jadardhan Gowda of BJP declared to be winner.
BJP showed their dominance in Sullia Constituency again with Harish, SN Manmatha, Asha Thimmappa and Pushpavathi of BJP went on to be victorious in Aranthodu, Bellare, Guthigaaru and Jalsoor respectively.Congress secured lead in Naravi, Kuwetu, Aladangady meanwhile BJP also secured lead in Dharmastala, Nelyadi, Panaje.
