BJP and Congress squabble over inclusion into standing committees

Mangalore, March 18: A row arose between the BJP and Congress members of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) following the standing committee elections. Protesting against the non-inclusion of Ambika Shetty, a Congress member, into any of the committees, 10 Congress members resigned from their posts.

According to an informal agreement between the Congress and the BJP, the BJP had agreed to include all 11 Congress members in the five standing committees. The Congress members were furious when they realized that only 10 members were included in 4 standing committees and that Ambika Shetty was not included into the fifth standing committee, which is the standing committee of agriculture and industries. Since senior BJP member Asha Thimmappa Gowda was included in 2 committees, Ambika had to be left out.

M. S. Mohammed, the former vice president, and Mamatha D. S. Gatty, the former president, attempted to suppress the issue by having a few informal talks with Santhosh Kumar Rai, the senior member of the BJP. The BJP’s efforts to resolve the issue by getting in touch with Padmanabha Kottari, the BJP district unit president, also failed.

During a meeting held to resolve the issue, Congress members urged President Shailaja to include Ambika Shetty in any of the committees, failing which the Congress members will stay out of the committees, but will extend all cooperation in conducting meetings and taking up developmental works.

Shailaja finally adjourned the meeting till she received guidance from her party.
