BJP and Congress both claim victory in GP poll. Gregory Patrao Won.

Mangalore Today News

Mangalore, May 17, 2010: Although the GP polls were organized on a non partisan basis, they reflected partisan inclinations. Activists supporting their respective parties gathered in larger numbers near counting centers in Mangalore, Sullia, Puttur, Bantwal, and Belthangady. Loud cheers rent the air when their respective parties emerged victorious. The activists later took the victorious candidates in a procession to their respective GP’s to felicitate them. All political parties including Congress, Janata Dal (S), Communist parties, and BJP were openly supporting the candidates and had also financed their campaigns.

3,182 members were elected out of the 3,207 contestants for the 200 GPs. Twenty-five of these were unanimously selected. 938 candidates were elected for the 49 GPs of Mangalore. 804 members were elected for the 46 GPs of Bantwal. 583 members were elected for the 41 GPs of Belthangady. 563 members were elected for the 37 GPs of Puttur. 320 members were elected for the 27 GPs of Sullia, which is the smallest of the taluks.

Gregory Patrao, the farmer whose house was demolished recently by KIADB officials has won in the Grama Panchayat elections. He won the election from Bala Gram Panchayat that had 13 seats.

The BJP claims to have won the majority in the district. Mr. Padmanabha Kottari, the district president of the BJP, said that the party has won 165 GPs out of a total 200 GPs. Mr. Ramanath Rai, the district president of the Congress, said that the Congress has won 155 GPs. The Communist parties as well as the JDS have not made any statements.

In Mangalore, BJP activists organized victory marches at night after the election results were released by the president of the party. The Congress activists also organized celebrations and rallies in Yedapadavu, Vamanjoor, Vamanapadavu, and other places.

Both parties claimed to be victorious in the other four taluks too. Nobody can convincingly state which of the two parties has the majority in the GPs. Despite the fact that the election commission had instructed political parties not to get involved in the GP elections, all the parties have shown interest.

So far, nobody can say which of the political parties dominates the Gram Panchayat. This fact will become clear only during the GP meetings.
