Autonomous colleges to follow varsity guidelines – VC Shivashankar MurthyMangalore, OCtobetr 21: Mangalore University has directed all the autonomous colleges to adhere to the guidelines of the university and convert their examination marks scheme to 80:20 by November 15, warning that if the autonomous colleges fail to do this, students passing out of the colleges during the current academic year will not receive their degree certificates.

In his address at the general body meeting of the academic council of Mangalore Univeristy, Vice Chancellor Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, said that only St. Agnes College and St. Aloysius College are not following the university’s 80:20 exam schemes, adding that all the other colleges are following the university scheme. He directed the two colleges to convert to the prescribed exam scheme and submit the ledger to the university by Oct 31 or latest by Nov 15.

St. Aloysius College had launched M. Com, MA in Communications, and MA in Applied Economics, for which it had sought approval in 2008 – 09. A team from the Mangalore University arrived at the college to find out if the courses can be approved and reported that the courses should not be approved because the institution did not have qualified faculty to teach these courses. Moreover, it did not follow the prescribed scheme of examination.

Recently, the state government had intervened in the matter and arranged a meeting of the heads of all autonomous colleges with the university authorities, during which all the autonomous colleges, which were following 50:50 and 70:30 schemes agreed to convert it to the prescribed 80:20 scheme.

Government orders strictly state that autonomous institutions should not start any course without the permission of the university. The VC said that a university team has re-inspected St. Aloysius College and decided to approve the new courses because the college has appointed qualified teachers and has agreed to adopt the prescribed form of examination. The final decision will be taken once the colleges submit the ledger.
